What to Keep in Mind Before a Winter Oil Change
posted on
2/11/2020 3:29:10 PM
Winter weather can be tough on your car. From your windshield wipers to your tires to your
battery
, you don’t want to go into the cold winter months unprepared. All good vehicle owners know that they keep their oil changed regularly, but did you know that the type of oil change you ask for might depend on the weather?
Community Car Care in Alexandria, VA
offers quality advice. Here are some things to keep in mind when choosing the right
oil change
this winter:
Engine Oil Viscosity
The viscosity of a liquid determines how fast or slow it willow “flow.” If an oil is named “10W-40,” the “10W” tells you the maximum viscosity of that oil at a low temperature. The “W” is for winter. The lower the W number becomes, the better the oil will perform in winter temperatures. The second number, 40, refers to the oil’s viscosity at 100 degrees Celsius. This number will also lower as viscosity lowers, meaning a thinner oil will have a lower number and a thicker oil will have a higher number. This is because, as you probably know, a thick liquid does not flow as easily in low temperatures, making thicker engine oil a poor choice for winter conditions.
Choose a Quality Oil Filter
Cold weather can cause a sudden onset of pressure that may be hard on your oil filter, especially if it isn’t well constructed. The sealing rings, split clamp, and canister can all be damaged in a sudden burst of pressure, so it is important to choose the correct oil filter for your car and change it regularly. To upgrade from a standard oil filter, ask for a filter that comes equipped with a spring-loaded bypass valve. This valve will open in case you forget to change your oil for a while, creating a bypass for dirty oil so that it doesn’t cause costly damage to your engine.
