Fall Auto Maintenance Tips

posted on
The summer is super-hot. The winter is beyond cold. Fall! It’s just right. It just doesn’t get any better. The weather is perfect, it’s not freezing yet, but you still manage to get a nice, cool breeze on most days. But cold days are coming so it’s time to start thinking about getting your car ready for the cold months ahead. Here are some simple auto maintenance tips to keep your vehicle in top condition.

1. Replace your wiper blades. Wiper blades wear down or crack. Check your blades to make sure they are flexible and still able to clean your windshield.
2. Fall is a good time to inspect your car battery, making sure the cables and terminals are snug, and retighten as necessary for good contact.
3. As your car age, the headlights can become cloudy or hazy. This can pose a serious threat to safety, compromising night vision and reducing the effectiveness of your headlights.
4. Check your tires to make sure they have the accepted tread depth. If you notice that your tires have less than 1/8-inch of tread left, then it’s time for new tires. (The distance from a quarter's rim to George Washington's hairline is about 1/8 inch.)
5. Test your heater/Defroster.  On those chilly mornings, it’s nice to crank up the heat for a comfortable commute into work. If the air doesn’t seem to be blowing properly, you may need to get your vents cleaned. Your defroster should be clear up your front windows quickly. If your visibility is obscured by fogged windows it can be dangerous.
6. Check your stopping power. Your brakes are the most important part of your vehicle. Don’t take it for granted. Roads can be slippery so have your brakes inspected.
