Driving Tips to Save Your Brakes
posted on
9/11/2019 1:01:55 PM
The way that you drive affects the longevity of your car parts. With any vehicle, the brakes will have to be changed from time to time. Your brakes generate stopping power by creating huge amounts of friction and heat. Your brakes will wear out while doing its job, it wears a little every time you use it. A few simple tricks can help extend the life of your vehicle braking system parts ensuring that the wearable components last longer before requiring replacement.
After generating high brake temperature, allow the vehicle to cruise a few moments without any application on the brake pedals where feasible. This allows cool air to flow over the brakes reducing temperatures in a quick controlled manner
When you see an upcoming stop, remove your foot from the accelerator immediately. Let the vehicle coast, so it can decelerate slowly on its own, without using the brakes.
Downshifting a gear or two ahead of steep hills or drawn-out stops reduces the workload and wear on your brakes.
Speed causes wear on brake pad exponentially. Full and complete stops from high speed is the absolute cause of premature brake pad wear.
Avoid “two-footing” your brake pedals
There is absolutely no reason to step on the gas and “hurry up to stop” when the cars ahead of you are clearly not moving. All you’ll do is waste fuel – and when you do have to stop, you’ll put excessive wear and tear on your brake pads.
